When we clobber PodIP we should also overwrite PodIPs and not rely
on the apiserver to fix it for us - this caused the Kubelet status
manager to report a large string of the following warnings when
it tried to reconcile a host network pod:
```
I0309 19:41:05.283623 1326 status_manager.go:846] Pod status is inconsistent with cached status for pod "machine-config-daemon-jvwz4_openshift-machine-config-operator(61176279-f752-4e1c-ac8a-b48f0a68d54a)", a reconciliation should be triggered:
&v1.PodStatus{
... // 5 identical fields
HostIP: "10.0.32.2",
PodIP: "10.0.32.2",
- PodIPs: []v1.PodIP{{IP: "10.0.32.2"}},
+ PodIPs: []v1.PodIP{},
StartTime: s"2020-03-09 19:41:05 +0000 UTC",
InitContainerStatuses: nil,
... // 3 identical fields
}
```
With the changes to the apiserver, this only happens once, but it is
still a bug.
After a pod reaches a terminal state and all containers are complete
we can delete the pod from the API server. The dispatchWork method
needs to wait for all container status to be available before invoking
delete. Even after the worker stops, status updates will continue to
be delivered and the sync handler will continue to sync the pods, so
dispatchWork gets multiple opportunities to see status.
The previous code assumed that a pod in Failed or Succeeded had no
running containers, but eviction or deletion of running pods could
still have running containers whose status needed to be reported.
This modifies earlier test to guarantee that the "fallback" exit
code 137 is never reported to match the expectation that all pods
exit with valid status for all containers (unless some exceptional
failure like eviction were to occur while the test is running).
If Containerd is used on Windows, then we can also mount individual
files into containers (e.g.: termination-log files), which was not
possible with Docker.
Checks if the container runtime is containerd, and if it is, then also
mount the termination-log file.

This patch moves the HostUtil functionality from the util/mount package
to the volume/util/hostutil package.
All `*NewHostUtil*` calls are changed to return concrete types instead
of interfaces.
All callers are changed to use the `*NewHostUtil*` methods instead of
directly instantiating the concrete types.
This starts ephemeral containers prior to init containers so that
ephemeral containers will still be started when init containers fail to
start.
Also improves tests and comments with review suggestions.
This patch refactors pkg/util/mount to be more usable outside of
Kubernetes. This is done by refactoring mount.Interface to only contain
methods that are not K8s specific. Methods that are not relevant to
basic mount activities but still have OS-specific implementations are
now found in a mount.HostUtils interface.
When upgrading to 1.13, pods that were created prior to the upgrade have
no pod.Spec.EnableServiceLinks set. This causes a segfault and prevents
the pod from ever starting.
Check and set to the default if nil.

This allows kubelets to stop the necessary work when the context has

These are all flagged by Go 1.11's

Containerized subpath
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
Containerized kubelet needs a different implementation of `PrepareSafeSubpath` than kubelet running directly on the host.
On the host we safely open the subpath and then bind-mount `/proc/<pidof kubelet>/fd/<descriptor of opened subpath>`.
With kubelet running in a container, `/proc/xxx/fd/yy` on the host contains path that works only inside the container, i.e. `/rootfs/path/to/subpath` and thus any bind-mount on the host fails.
Solution:
- safely open the subpath and gets its device ID and inode number
- blindly bind-mount the subpath to `/var/lib/kubelet/pods/<uid>/volume-subpaths/<name of container>/<id of mount>`. This is potentially unsafe, because user can change the subpath source to a link to a bad place (say `/run/docker.sock`) just before the bind-mount.
- get device ID and inode number of the destination. Typical users can't modify this file, as it lies on /var/lib/kubelet on the host.
- compare these device IDs and inode numbers.

Add proxy for container streaming in kubelet for streaming auth.
For https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/36666, option 2 of https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/36666#issuecomment-378440458.
This PR:
1. Removed the `DirectStreamingRuntime`, and changed `IndirectStreamingRuntime` to `StreamingRuntime`. All `DirectStreamingRuntime`s, `dockertools` and `rkt`, were removed.
2. Proxy container streaming in kubelet instead of returning redirect to apiserver. This solves the container runtime authentication issue, which is what we agreed on in https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/36666.
Please note that, this PR replaced the redirect with proxy directly instead of adding a knob to switch between the 2 behaviors. For existing CRI runtimes like containerd and cri-o, they should change to serve container streaming on localhost, so as to make the whole container streaming connection secure.
If a general authentication mechanism proposed in https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/62747 is ready, we can switch back to redirect, and all code can be found in github history.
Please also note that this added some overhead in kubelet when there are container streaming connections. However, the actual bottleneck is in the apiserver anyway, because it does proxy for all container streaming happens in the cluster. So it seems fine to get security and simplicity with this overhead. @derekwaynecarr @mrunalp Are you ok with this? Or do you prefer a knob?

Kubelet now proxies container streaming between apiserver and container runtime. The connection between kubelet and apiserver is authenticated. Container runtime should change streaming server to serve on localhost, to make the connection between kubelet and container runtime local.
In this way, the whole container streaming connection is secure. To switch back to the old behavior, set `--redirect-container-streaming=true` flag.
```
Kubelet should not resolve symlinks outside of mounter interface.
Only mounter interface knows, how to resolve them properly on the host.
As consequence, declaration of SafeMakeDir changes to simplify the
implementation:
from SafeMakeDir(fullPath string, base string, perm os.FileMode)
to SafeMakeDir(subdirectoryInBase string, base string, perm os.FileMode)
Ensure /etc/hosts has a header always - Fix conformance test
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
We need to be able to tell if an /etc/hosts in a container has been touched by kubernetes or not (whether we use the host network or not).
We have 2 scenarios where we copy /etc/hosts
- with host network (we just copy the /etc/hosts from node)
- without host network (create a fresh /etc/hosts from pod info)
We are having trouble figuring out whether a /etc/hosts in a
pod/container has been "fixed-up" or not. And whether we used
host network or a fresh /etc/hosts in the various ways we start
up the tests which are:
- VM/box against a remote cluster
- As a container inside the k8s cluster
- DIND scenario in CI where test runs inside a managed container
Please see previous mis-guided attempt to fix this problem at
ba20e63446 In this commit we revert
the code from there as well.
So we should make sure:
- we always add a header if we touched the file
- we add slightly different headers so we can figure out if we used the
host network or not.
Therefore the final subPath directory must be "locked" somehow
On Windows, we lock the directories. On Linux, we bind-mount the final
Improve error returned when fetching container logs during pod termination
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
This change better handles fetching of logs when a container is in a crash loop backoff state. In cases where it is unable to fetch the logs, it gives a helpful error message back to a user who has requested logs of a container from a terminated pod. Rather than attempting to get logs for a container using an empty container ID, it returns a useful error message.
In cases where the container runtime gets an error, log the error but don't leak it back through the API to the user.
Revert "Merge pull request #51857 from kubernetes/revert-51307-kc-type-refactor"
This reverts commit 9d27d92420, reversing
changes made to 2e69d4e625.
See original: #51307
We punted this from 1.8 so it could go through an API review. The point
of this PR is that we are trying to stabilize the kubeletconfig API so
that we can move it out of alpha, and unblock features like Dynamic
Kubelet Config, Kubelet loading its initial config from a file instead
of flags, kubeadm and other install tools having a versioned API to rely
on, etc.
We shouldn't rev the version without both removing all the deprecated
junk from the KubeletConfiguration struct, and without (at least
temporarily) removing all of the fields that have "Experimental" in
their names. It wouldn't make sense to lock in to deprecated fields.
"Experimental" fields can be audited on a 1-by-1 basis after this PR,
and if found to be stable (or sufficiently alpha-gated), can be restored
to the KubeletConfiguration without the "Experimental" prefix.
do not update init containers status if terminated
fixes#29972#41580
This fixes an issue where, if a completed init container is removed while the pod or subsequent init containers are still running, the status for that init container will be reset to `Waiting` with `PodInitializing`.
This can manifest in a number of ways.
If the init container is removed why the main pod containers are running, the status will be reset with no functional problem but the status will be reported incorrectly in `kubectl get pod` for example
If the init container is removed why a subsequent init container is running, the init container will be **re-executed** leading to all manner of badness.
Mount propagation in kubelet
Together with #45724 it implements mount propagation as proposed in https://github.com/kubernetes/community/pull/659
There is:
- New alpha annotation that allows user to explicitly set propagation mode for each `VolumeMount` in pod containers (to be replaced with real `VolumeMount.Propagation` field during beta) + validation + tests. "Private" is the default one (= no change to existing pods).
I know about proposal for real API fields for alpha feature in https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wuoSqHkeT51mQQ7dIFhUKrdi3-1wbKrNWeIL4cKb9zU/edit, but it seems it's not implemented yet. It would save me quite lot of code and ugly annotation.
- Updated CRI API to transport chosen propagation to Docker.
- New `kubelet --experimental-mount-propagation` option to enable the previous bullet without modifying types.go (worked around with changing `KubeletDeps`... not nice, but it's better than adding a parameter to `NewMainKubelet` and removing it in the next release...)
```release-note

Relax restrictions on environment variable names.
Fixes#2707
The POSIX standard restricts environment variable names to uppercase letters, digits, and the underscore character in shell contexts only. For generic application usage, it is stated that all other characters shall be tolerated. This change relaxes the rules to some degree. Namely, we stop requiring environment variable names to be strict `C_IDENTIFIERS` and start permitting lowercase, dot, and dash characters.
Public container images using environment variable names beyond the shell-only context can benefit from this relaxation. Elasticsearch is one popular example.

Fix subPath existence check to not follow symlink
**What this PR does / why we need it**:
Volume mounting logic introduced in #43775 and #45623 checks
for subPath existence before attempting to create a directory,
should subPath not be present.
This breaks if subPath is a dangling symlink, os.Stat returns
"do not exist" status, yet `os.MkdirAll` can't create directory
as symlink is present at the given path.
This patch makes existence check to use os.Lstat which works for
normal files/directories as well as doesn't not attempt to follow
symlink, therefore it's "do not exist" status is more reliable when
making a decision whether to create directory or not.

normal files/directories as well as doesn't not attempt to follow
symlink, therefore it's "do not exist" status is more reliable when
making a decision whether to create directory or not.
subPath symlinks can be dangling in situations where kubelet is
running in a container itself with access to docker socket, such
as CoreOS's kubelet-wrapper script
Since v1.5 and the removal of --configure-cbr0:
0800df74ab "Remove the legacy networking mode --configure-cbr0"
kubelet hasn't done any shaping operations internally. They
have all been delegated to network plugins like kubenet or
external CNI plugins. But some shaping code was still left
in kubelet, so remove it now that it's unused.
